Note: Plus-size letters are far less standardised than straight sizes: the map shown (1X to 5X across US 14W to 32W) is the most common US convention, but some plus retailers shift each letter up by about two sizes, and bust in centimetres varies several centimetres between charts, so check the brand's own chart. International letters against the British scale
Letter sizes are bands, not single points: on this chart a size such as INT L lines up with 2 neighbouring UK numbers, so the same letter can round either way between them. The table shows every UK value each band covers.
Each international letter spans a couple of British numbers, so the match is a band rather than a point. Japan formalised its version differently again: the JIS L 4005 number encodes bust at a standard height, with letters for stature and a figure-type code for the hips, so a label like 9AR is a statistical average woman rather than a vanity number. Set against that, an S or M is coarse, and the body-measurement column is what turns a letter into a size you can trust.

Is a UK size a single letter?
No. A letter covers two adjacent UK numbers, so the same S or M can land on either, depending on the garment and brand.
Why do Japanese sizes use codes like 9AR?
The number encodes bust at a standard height and the letters add stature and figure type, so the code describes the body, not a fashion label.
