The rollover that breaks the arithmetic
The children's US scale runs up to US 13.5 and then restarts at US 1 as the foot keeps growing, so no single offset links the two columns. Around that rollover the EU side keeps climbing steadily, which is why EU 34 sits where the US number has just reset.
Children's US sizing counts up through the small sizes and then restarts at 1 when it reaches the big-kid range, while the European number climbs straight through without a reset. That single break is why no fixed rule links the two columns across the whole chart. German fitting practice sidesteps the label problem entirely: the WMS system certifies an inner length for each size with growing room already built in, because a printed number tells you less than the length inside the shoe.
Common questions
Why does the US kids' number jump back down mid-chart?
The children's scale restarts at 1 when it crosses from little-kid into big-kid sizes, so a rising foot briefly meets a smaller printed number.
Should I buy a size up for growing room?
A little, not a lot. Fitting guides allow roughly a centimetre of room; more than that and the shoe slips and trips the child.
