Note: Men's big-and-tall letter sizes are not fully standardised: some makers shift the whole ladder up, labelling a 46 to 48 inch chest as 2XL instead of XL, so these are the most common convention rather than a fixed rule. Chest in centimetres continues the site's own chart at about 5 cm per two inches.

Why the British and American numbers match
US holds a steady 0 above UK at every row of this chart, so UK 44 converts to US 44 and the same gap carries from the smallest size to the largest. A single step converts the whole range cleanly.
Men's tailoring settled on the chest measurement early, so the British and American numbers describe the same thing and read the same on the label. There is no offset to learn. What varies is the garment: a jacket, a shirt and a casual top cut for one chest number fit differently, because ease is a design choice, not a size rule. EN 13402 keeps the whole framework voluntary, which is why a shared US and UK number still meets a different European figure across the Channel.
Common questions
Are UK and US men's clothing sizes identical?
For chest-based garments, yes. The number describes the chest, so the same figure appears on both labels with no conversion needed.
Then why do two same-size tops fit differently?
Ease differs by garment. A tailored jacket and a casual shirt on the same chest number are cut with different room by design.
