US holds a steady 10 below EU at every row of this chart, so EU 54 converts to US 44 and the same gap carries from the smallest size to the largest. A single step converts the whole range cleanly.

The European men's number is close to the chest in centimetres halved, so it reads as a rounded body measurement, while the American size uses the older inch-based chest figure. That is why the offset between them is steady rather than drifting: both track the chest, just in different units. Country habits still nudge the label, since EN 13402 is voluntary and German, French and Italian houses round the same chest a little differently.
