From a foot measurement to the British women's scale
Every 5 mm of measured foot length adds half a size on the UK scale, so the two columns stay in step the whole way down. Measuring the bare foot in millimetres is the reliable way to read 24.5 cm as UK 5.5.
The British scale grew from sizing the foot in barleycorns, so reading it from a millimetre measurement is fairly direct, though never perfectly even because a barleycorn is a third of an inch, not a round metric step. For women's shoes the measurement matters more than the label, since a UK number describes a last and lasts wander between makers. Take foot length as the anchor: measure both feet, use the larger, and let the table place the UK size.
Common questions
Does a UK women's size describe my foot or the shoe?
It traces back to the foot in barleycorns, but the printed label describes a last, so brands can differ by up to half a size.
Which foot do I measure for UK sizing?
The longer one. Feet are rarely identical, so sizing to the smaller foot leaves a shoe that pinches.
